Quite often, when teaching a new dance, morris dancers can mysteriously find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time with no explanation as to how this happened other than the musicians being at fault somehow, as the music is supposed to tell the dancers what to do and when. Recently we have found ourselves in the thick of a place-confusion epidemic at Worthing Larks, so Dancing By Numbers tabards were designed to hopefully lift the confusion and provide each dancer with clear, easy-to-read reminders as to where they are supposed to be in the set. In theory the idea worked but unfortunately, as a seasoned dancer would know, when you put morris dancers together anything can happen! 3 and 4 spent so much time looking at each other’s numbers that they became quite overwhelmed and ended up swapping places in a muddle of sticks halfway through the dance, whilst the Squire was so bowled over with the shiny new numbers that she quite forgot to call the dance! The musician grinned as the Foreman reminded everyone how to count to four. For once it was not her fault!
